Introduction to SEIE

The School of Electronic and Information Engineering (SEIE) is one of the prominent schools of Beijing Jiaotong University, which consists of three departments (Department of Information and Communication Engineering, Department of Automatic Control Engineering, Department of Electronic Engineering), one institute  (Institute of Light Wave Technology) as well as National Teaching Base for Basic Electric and Electronics Engineering.

After years of development, some major disciplines, especially Communication and Information Engineering, have attained a leading position in China. Under the guidance of Academician Jian Shuishen, some research achievements in optical fiber communication, optical fiber sensing, optical electronics devices, IP router and broadband communication have even come up to international level. What’s more, Traffic Information Engineering has gained its leading position in the world. It is playing a major role in guaranteeing the safety and high speed for railways in China and is bringing great economic and social benefits. In the recent years, we have assumed various tasks, including National Hi-tech Plan ‘973’ and ‘863’ Programs, key natural science programs funded by National Planning Committee and Science and Technology Committee, as well as projects for railway development, which occupy 70% of the total funding. The amount of our research funding has been increasing steadily.

Currently, there are 227 faculties in the SEIE. Among them, there are 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Science, 1 chief scientist of ‘973’, 36 professors, 68 associate professors and 12 senior engineers. 98% of the teaching staff own Master Degrees and above; 62% of them own Doctoral Degrees. At present, the total enrollment of SEIE is about 2230 students  2160 undergraduate students, 840 postgraduate students and 230 doctoral students.

Our school has 2 national key disciplines (Communication and Information System, Traffic Information Engineering and Control), 3 ministerial key disciplines (Communication and Information System, Traffic Information Engineering and Control, Electromagnetic Field and Microwave Technology), 6 disciplines offering doctoral programs (Traffic Information Engineering and Control, Electromagnetic Field and Microwave Technology, Intelligent Traffic Engineering, Information Network and Security, Optical and Mobile Communication), 10 disciplines offering programs for master degrees(Optical and Mobile Communication, Control Theory and Control Engineering, Traffic Information Engineering and Control, Communication and Information System, Electromagnetic Field and Microwave Technology, Environmental Engineering, Microelectronics and Solid State Electronics, Intelligent Traffic Engineering, Information Network and Security, Circuit and System), 2 post-doctoral stations (Communication and Information System, Traffic Information Engineering and Control), 2 disciplines offering positions for Changjiang Scholars(Communication and Information System, Traffic Information Engineering and Control), and 1 discipline offering program for Master Degree of Professional Engineering(Electronics and Communication Engineering).

With the development of a world-known high-level discipline as their objective, SEIE’s faculty and students are determined to build even a brighter future for the discipline electronic and information engineering by focusing on the direction of the discipline, rallying the contingent of scholars, building the scholastic base, ameliorating the academic climate, remaining united and practical as ever before, seeking the true and making innovations.
